FREDERICK, MD – The Frederick Keys dropped a hard-fought game five of six against the Wilmington Blue Rocks (Nationals) in 11 innings Saturday night, falling by a score of 4-3 at Nymeo Field at Harry Grove Stadium.
The Blue Rocks got a two-RBI single in the top of the 11th inning to take down the Keys by two, as Frederick will look to salvage the series Sunday afternoon in the series finale in the Key City.
JT Quinn began his night on the mound for Frederick with a seven-pitch and 1-2-3 first inning, keeping it a scoreless game through an inning of play to open game five.
After both sides went scoreless in the second, Luis Vazquez brought home the game’s first run on an RBI single to center, handing the home team a 1-0 lead approaching the fourth in the Key City.
Wilmington evened things up at one apiece in the top of the fourth on an RBI sacrifice fly, evening up the score at one all approaching the fifth inning at Nymeo Field at Harry Grove Stadium.
In the bottom of the fifth, the Keys took the lead back on a solo homer from Edwin Amparo, giving the home team a 2-1 lead going into the sixth Saturday night.
The Blue Rocks tied the score at 2-2 off a solo homer from Eli Willits during the top of the sixth, taking the game to the seventh knotted at two apiece, with both sides going back and forth in front of a packed crowd.
Following the Keys and Blue Rocks finishing with zeroes in the seventh, Todd Kniebbe recorded a 1-2-3 top of the eighth inning, allowing the game to stay tied at two apiece heading into the ninth, as the Keys tried to get a late rally.
However, both teams went scoreless in the ninth inning of play, forcing extra innings for the second time of the series with the score still even at two runs apiece.
In the 10th inning, a throw out from Braylin Tavera got the inherited runner out at third to keep the Blue Rocks off the board, but the Keys went scoreless in the bottom of the frame, forcing an 11th inning with the score still knotted at 2-2.
A two-RBI single for the Blue Rocks handed them a 4-2 lead in the top of the 11th inning, taking the game to the bottom frame with the Keys trying to come from behind.
Despite the Keys getting one run home in the bottom of the frame on an RBI single to left from Luis Vazquez, but the Blue Rocks got the final out and took home the victory, winning game five by a score of 4-3 in 11 innings.
The Keys and Blue Rocks prepare for the series finale Sunday afternoon, with first pitch set for 3 p.m. from Nymeo Field at Harry Grove Stadium.
Sunday’s game represents Candy Chaos presented by Goldfish Swim School along with Sunday Funday courtesy of Goodwill Industries of Monocacy Valley with there being pregame catch in the outfield and Meet the Team for the first 30 minutes after gates open.
