LAKEWOOD, NJ – The Frederick Keys secured their fifth straight win over the Jersey Shore BlueClaws (Phillies) Saturday night, winning by a score of 3-1 at ShoreTown Ballpark.
The Keys held the BlueClaws to one run on seven base hits as the Frederick pitching did not allow an earned run for the second straight night, with the visiting Keys now looking to sweep the six-game series tomorrow afternoon on the road.
Kyson Witherspoon began his time with the Keys and the Orioles organization strong with a scoreless bottom of the first, as the Keys and BlueClaws went on to trade zeros in the first inning in ShoreTown.
After both sides went scoreless in the second inning, Witherspoon faced the minimum in the bottom of the third, with the final out of the frame being a caught stealing at third due to a throw from the pitcher, taking the game into the fourth still knotted at zeros Saturday night.
Jersey Shore brought home the game’s first run in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI single, but a strikeout from Witherspoon kept it a one-run inning with the home team leading 1-0 heading into the fifth.
Frederick tied things up at one apiece in the top of the fifth thanks to a two-out RBI triple from Fernando Peguero, and Witherspoon and Braeden Sloan combined to get a scoreless bottom frame to leave the bases loaded.
Following each team going off the board in the sixth inning with the game still tied at one apiece, a wild pitch brought home Leandro Arias from third, with an RBI single from Félix Amparo giving the Keys a 3-1 lead, as a scoreless bottom frame thrown in relief by Evan Yates kept the visitors ahead by two approaching the eighth at ShoreTown Ballpark.
Yates only needed four pitches to retire the side in order in the bottom of the eighth inning, as his three quick outs took the contest into the ninth with Frederick still ahead by a score of 3-1 in Lakewood.
After a scoreless top of the ninth for the Keys, Yates got the final three outs and held off the BlueClaws in game five, as the Keys took home their fifth straight win by a score of 3-1 on the road.
The series finale between the Keys and BlueClaws is set for Sunday afternoon, with first pitch at 1:05 p.m. on Sunday from ShoreTown Ballpark.
