FREDERICK, MD – The Frederick Keys earned the game two victory over the Asheville Tourists (Astros) Wednesday night, winning by a score of 3-2 in 11 innings at Nymeo Field at Harry Grove Stadium.
Randal Diaz recorded a walk-off single in the bottom of the 11th inning to hand the Keys a 2-0 series lead, as six one-run innings from reliever Jake Dykhoff helped Frederick hold off Asheville in the later innings.
Following a scoreless first inning to begin the night, Evan Yates picked up a zero on the mound bottom of the second along with his second strikeout, keeping it a 0-0 game through two innings of play.
Frederick struck first in the bottom of the third courtesy of a two-RBI double from Enddy Azocar, handing the Keys an early 2-0 lead heading into the fourth from Nymeo Field at Harry Grove Stadium.
After the Keys and Tourists went off the board in the fourth inning, Asheville cut the deficit in half with a solo homer to left, making it a 2-1 game going into the sixth in the Key City.
Dykhoff recorded a scoreless top of the sixth in his first game as a Key this season, allowing the home team in Frederick to stay ahead by one entering the eighth, with Dykhoff posting a 1-2-3 top of the seventh inning of work.
In the top of the eighth, the Tourists evened things up at two apiece on a second solo homer of the night, taking the game to the ninth with the score evened at two apiece in game two of the six-game series.
Despite the Keys loading the bases in the bottom of the ninth, the Tourists squeaked out of the jam and forcing extra innings with the score tied at two apiece from Frederick.
Dykhoff recorded a scoreless top of the 10th inning, and kept the score tied at two apiece heading into the 11th after a scoreless bottom frame.
Dykhoff went on to strike out the side in the top of the frame, with then Diaz recording the walk-off single to left-center field to win the game for Frederick, as the Keys won game two of six against the Tourists by a score of 3-2 in 11 innings.
The Keys and Tourists meet for the third time in as many days Thursday night, with first pitch set for 7 p.m. from Nymeo Field at Harry Grove Stadium.
Thursday’s game represents Sensory Friendly Night with there being softer sounds, no flashing lights, and sensory spaces available for fans. It will also be Taphouse Thursday with local craft breweries featuring beer specials in the 4 1/2 Innings Taphouse.
