Knights Beat the Indians 7-5 Monday

(UPTOWN CHARLOTTE, NC) -- RHP Michael Kopech struck-out seven batters over six solid innings, shortstop Eddy Alvarez continued his red-hot hitting, and the Charlotte Knights beat the Indianapolis Indians by a score of 7-5 on Monday at BB&T Ballpark in Uptown Charlotte. The Knights won three of four against the Indians in the series.

Kopech (2-2, 3.86) was sharp in his 10th outing of the 2018 season. The 22-year-old right-handed pitcher allowed two runs on three hits over six innings of work to earn his second win of the season. Ranked as the top pitching prospect in the Chicago White Sox organization, Kopech added seven strikeouts on Monday, which upped his total to 68 on the season and 412 in his career.

The Indians scored first in the game and did so against Kopech in the top of the second inning. Indianapolis third baseman Kevin Kramer launched a solo home run, which gave the club an early 1-0 lead. The Knights quickly battled back in the bottom of the second inning and went on to score four runs in the frame. The inning was highlighted by two triples, including a bases-clearing triple off the bat of Alvarez. Right fielder Mason Robbins recorded his team-high third triple of the season in the inning.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, first baseman Casey Gillaspie recorded a two-run single, which propelled the Knights to a 6-1 lead at that point. Gillaspie finished the game with two hits and two RBIs. Left fielder Jake Elmore and designated hitter Johnny Giavotella also had two hits apiece in the game.

Outfielder Jacob May launched his second home run of the season, a 353-foot blast in the bottom of the eighth inning. May finished the game 2-for-5 with the home run, a stolen base, and two RBIs. He now has a team-high 10 stolen bases on the season.

The Knights will now hit the road and make the trek to Allentown, PA to open a three-game series against the Lehigh Valley IronPigs (Triple-A affiliate of the Philadelphia Phillies) on Tuesday night.
