JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (July 2, 2017) - After falling behind 5-0 early, the Mobile BayBears, the Double-A affiliate of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, sent the tying run to the plate in the top of the ninth inning but fell to the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp 6-4 Sunday afternoon at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville.
The BayBears (33-46 overall, 3-7 second half) trailed 5-0 through the second inning and 6-2 in the ninth. However, Sherman Johnson hit an RBI double to score David Fletcher , and Johnson came home on a wild pitch. With a runner on second and the tying run at the plate, Clayton Mortensen induced a groundout to end the game and earn his third save.
Johnson drove in three of the four runs for the BayBears with his ninth-inning double and a two-run homer in the fourth. It was his second home run with Mobile and third of the season. Johnson and Fletcher both scored twice for the four runs, with Fletcher finishing the game 2-for-4.
Jacksonville (37-43, 7-3) tallied five runs in the first two innings, with four coming on home runs. Cam Maron hit a three-run blast off Alex Klonowski (4-4) in the first, and Braxton Lee hit a solo shot in the second.
Matt Tomshaw (8-4) earned his team-high eighth win, giving up two runs on just four hits in seven innings pitched.
The BayBears wrap up the six-game road series against Jacksonville Monday at 6:05 p.m. CT. Right-handed pitcher Jake Jewell (4-5, 3.92 ERA) is slated to make the start against righty Joe Gunkel (2-4, 4.30 ERA) for the Jumbo Shrimp.
