The Winston-Salem Dash (58-49) erased a three-run deficit with a furious rally in the seventh, but the Asheville Tourists (36-70) answered immediately with four runs in the eighth to claim an 8-5 victory on Sunday afternoon at Truist Stadium.
Winston-Salem entered the seventh trailing 4-1 before stringing together six hits and scoring three times to pull even. Asheville, however, responded in the extra frame and never surrendered the lead again.
The Dash struck first in the fourth inning.
Kyle Lodise walked and stole second before Wes Kath ripped an RBI double to left field, giving Winston-Salem a 1-0 advantage.
That lead held until the sixth.
After DJ Newman singled and Justin Thomas Jr. walked, Ethan Frey lined an RBI single into right-center field to tie the game. Anthony Huezo followed with another run-scoring single before Jack Moss drove home two more with a base hit to left-center, giving Asheville a 4-1 lead.
The Dash refused to go quietly.
Ben Hartl opened the seventh with a triple and scored when Bryce Eblin doubled through the right side. Ely Brown followed with an RBI single to cut the deficit to one.
Two batters later, Javier Mogollon launched a solo home run to left field, completing the comeback and tying the game at 4-4.
Winston-Salem threatened for even more. George Wolkow and Jeral Perez followed with singles before Lodise walked to load the bases, but Asheville escaped the inning with the game still tied.
That missed opportunity proved costly.
With the automatic runner starting at second in the eighth, Asheville scored four times. Thomas singled before a wild pitch and throwing error brought home the go-ahead run. Frey added another run on a fielder’s choice before Huezo doubled and Moss singled to extend the advantage to 8-4.
The Dash managed one run in the bottom half when Kath scored on an Asheville throwing error, but could not mount another comeback.
Mogollon homered and collected two hits, while Kath doubled, scored twice, and drove in a run. Hartl tripled and Brown added an RBI single as Winston-Salem’s seventh-inning rally ultimately fell short.
