Late offense not enough in 6-5 loss to RailRiders

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Logan Driscoll drilled a two-run homer in the ninth inning but the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp fell to the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders 6-5 Tuesday night at PNC Field.

Jacksonville (71-72, 29-40) plated the opening run in the top of the second. Brandon Compton started the frame with a single. A fielder’s choice coupled with an error, put Kemp Alderman on second. He went to third on a base knock from Brayden Taylor. In the ensuing at-bat, Juan Matheus drove in Alderman with a sac fly, putting the Jumbo Shrimp ahead 1-0.

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (76-66, 39-29) responded in the home half of the second and never looked back. With one out, Oswaldo Cabrera walked and Max Schueman was hit by a pitch. A double steal placed runners on second and third. Following a strikeout, Duke Ellis knocked a two-run single giving the RailRiders a 2-1 advantage.

The RailRiders padded their lead in the third on a couple of Jumbo Shrimp miscues. Jasson Dominguez led off the inning with a walk. Two batters later, Marco Luciano walked. A double steal, coupled with a throwing error, plated Dominguez as the third run of the contest. Luciano went to third on the throwing error and scored on a wild pitch, pushing the advantage to 4-1.

The Jumbo Shrimp scratched a run across in the fifth. With one out, Johnny Olmstead smacked a base hit. A wild pitch paired with a ground ball from Cam Cannarella put Olmstead on third. In the next at-bat, Matthew Etzel walked and a wild pitch scored Olmstead cutting the deficit to 4-2.

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre added a run in the seventh. With one out, Ellis stole second and third. Two batters later, Dominguez walked and a wild pitch, plated Ellis putting the RailRiders in front by three.

Jacksonville responded again in the top of the eighth. Etzel began the frame with a walk and went to second on a single from Johnny Long. A wild pitch advanced runners to second and third and Compton brought in Etzel with a ground ball, making the score 5-3.

The RailRiders final run came in the bottom of the eighth. With one out, Cabrera and Ernesto Martinez Jr. smacked consecutive doubles, putting Scranton/Wilkes-Barre ahead, 6-3.

The Jumbo Shrimp tried to rally in the ninth. Matheus reached on an error to begin the inning and Driscoll (6) followed with a two-run blast, cutting the lead down to one. Chris Kean (S, 1) was able to get the next three outs, finishing off Jacksonville 6-5.

Jacksonville and Scranton/Wilkes-Barre continue their series with Wednesday’s 1:05 p.m. contest. Luis Palacios (3-2, 2.52 ERA) gets the ball for the Jumbo Shrimp and the RailRiders will counter with RHP Brendan Beck (10-2, 2.75 ERA). Coverage begins at 12:50 p.m. on ESPN 690 and ESPN690.com
