Late Surge Puts C's On Top Of Dust Devils 13-10

PASCO, WA – A furious rally in the later innings and a three-spot in the top of the tenth made the Canadians 13-10 winners over the Tri-City Dust Devils (LAA) Friday night at Gesa Stadium. After trailing 8-2 through four, Vancouver outscored Tri-City 11-2 from the sixth through the tenth to take their third of four games this week and remain a half game up for sole possession of first place in the Northwest League.

With the game tied at 10 after nine, the C’s began extra innings with a single from David Calabrese for his fourth hit of the night. With Calabrese on second after the throw home and two runners in scoring position, a groundout kept the runners where they were before an intentional walk loaded the bases. Pinch hitter Ryan Sprock followed with a bases-loaded walk that forced in the go-ahead run then Jaxson West singled home another. Dameury Pena provided another RBI single to give Vancouver a three-run cushion.

Reece Wissinger (W, 5-3) – who put up zeroes in the eighth and ninth – retired the side in order in the tenth to lock down the second-largest comeback win for the C’s this year.

Tri-City started the scoring with a three-run homer in the first. Vancouver used a lead-off double from Austin Smith in the second to plate a run later in the frame then got a two-out single and steal from Calabrese in the third before he raced home on a Smith base hit to make it 3-2.

A five-run fifth saw the Dust Devils score three unearned runs and race out to an 8-2 lead before the C’s could respond in the sixth. Pena doubled with two outs, JoJo Parker did the same to drive him in then Jake Casey uncorked his active roster-best 12^th home run of the season to pull the C’s within two.

Tri-City snatched a run back with a solo homer in the bottom of the sixth to lead 9-6, but the Canadians stormed ahead with four more runs in the seventh. Two walks and a wild pitch led to a Casey sacrifice fly, Maddox Latta singled home a run then Calabrese clubbed a two-out, go-ahead two-run shot in the next at-bat to put the C’s in front 10-9.

Another solo homer from the Dust Devils in the home half of the seventh evened things up 10-10, which was the score until the C’s took the lead for good in extras.

All nine spots in the order reached base and eight had a hit. Calabrese’s second four-hit game of the series paced the offense; he’s 11-for-20 with two doubles, two homers, seven runs scored seven RBI and four steals in four games. Pena, Latta and Smith also had multiple knocks.

Silvano Hechavarria takes the ball for the C’s tomorrow looking to lead them to a series win. Chase Shores goes for Tri-City. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on the C’s Baseball Network.
