CORPUS CHRISTI - Hooks right fielder Ramón Laureano has been named the team's 2017 Defensive Player of the Year.
Laureano was presented the Allstate Good Hands Award by team president Ken Schrom before Sunday's doubleheader sweep of the San Antonio Missions.
"Ramon had a remarkable season defensively," Schrom said. "Playing right field at Whataburger Field is one of the toughest - if not the toughest - defensive assignments in the Texas League. Strong wind currents influence the ball away from you into the alley when they don't knock it down.

"We've had some fine players hold that position for us through the years, talented prospects like Hunter Pence, Jake Goebbert, Preston Tucker, Jon Kemmer, and Teoscar Hernández. Ramon rates right up there with them."
Laureano, 23, topped Texas League outfielders in games played (123), assists (16), and double plays started (6). He committed four errors in 253 total chances for a .984 fielding percentage.
At the plate, the native of Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic batted .227 with 65 runs scored, 21 doubles, six triples, 11 home runs, 55 RBIs, and 24 stolen bases.
Laureano was selected by Houston in the 16th round of the 2014 draft from Northeastern Oklahoma A&M. He is currently the Astros' No. 12 prospect, according to mlbpipeline.com
