Long, Palacios take home Marlins’ monthly honors for September

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp first baseman/outfielder Jonathon Long and left-handed pitcher Luis Palacios have been named the Miami Marlins’ Next Wave Hitter and Pitcher of the Month, respectively, for September, the Marlins announced Wednesday.

Long played in 15 games with Jacksonville in September, slashing .268/.358/.482/.840 with three doubles, three home runs, 12 RBIs, nine walks and 10 runs scored. He ranked in the 82nd percentile among Triple-A hitters with a .348 xwOBA while placing in the level’s 73rd percentile with a .388 xwOBAcon.

The Orange, Calif., native began the season with Triple-A Iowa before being traded to Miami on August 3 as part of the package for left-handed pitcher Braxton Garrett. In 133 Triple-A games, Long batted .275/.369/.447/.816 while leading the International League in both doubles (36) and runs scored (93). He also finished in a tie for third in the circuit in hits (141), tied for fourth in extra-base hits (54), fifth in RBIs (83), seventh in walks (75), 17th in on-base percentage, 20th in batting average and 23rd in OPS.

Palacios made four starts with the Jumbo Shrimp in September. The 26-year-old posted a 2.77 ERA, yielding only nine hits and two walks in 13.0 innings. He struck out 15, with opponents batting only .191 against. During the month, Palacios led Miami’s farm system ith a 2.50 FIP, 29.4 percent strikeout rate, and 3.9 percent walk rate.

A native of Cagua in Venezuela, Palacios made 37 appearances, including 18 starts, between Jacksonville and Double-A Pensacola. He registered a 7-4 record and 3.42 ERA in 100.0 innings, with opponents hitting only .205 against him.

Long and Palacios are the fifth and sixth Jumbo Shrimp, respectively, to earn a Marlins’ Next Wave Award in 2026. Catcher Brian Navarreto was the Fish of the Month for April, outfielder Andrew Pintar nabbed Hitter of the Month for May, Brandon White earned Pitcher of the Month for June and infielder Brayden Taylor was the Defensive Player of the Month for August. Former Jumbo Shrimp Ethan O’Donnell was named Hitter of the Month for August while playing for Double-A Pensacola.
