Lugnuts close homestand with 2-0 loss

LANSING, Mich. - Chavez Young collected three hits and Turner Larkins tossed four scoreless innings in relief, but the Lansing Lugnuts (18-12) were swept by the Quad Cities River Bandits (16-12), 2-0, on Sunday afternoon at Cooley Law School Stadium.

A Corey Julks RBI single and a J.J. Matijevic RBI double in the fifth inning supplied the game's only runs for Quad Cities.

The Lugnuts managed only four hits - Young's three singles and a Brock Lundquist single - and one walk against Quad Cities starter Patrick Sandoval and reliever Enoli Paredes. Sandoval (Win, 2-1) struck out seven batters in six innings, yielding to Paredes (Save, 1) for the final three frames.

The River Bandits entered the game having scored 17 runs combined in the first two games, but they were limited by the Lugnuts' combination of Graham Spraker and Larkins.

Lansing starter Spraker (Loss, 0-1) pitched five innings, striking out four, walking one, and allowing two runs on five hits. Larkins took things from there, blanking the River Bandits from the sixth inning onward, allowing three hits, zero walks and striking out three.

Third baseman Kevin Smith went 0-for-3, ending his hitting streak at 16 games and his on-base streak at 27 games.

The Lugnuts next embark on a six-game road trip to the Badger State, playing three games at the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers Monday through Wednesday and three games at the Beloit Snappers Thursday through Saturday.
