SOUTH BEND, IN (May 5-6, 2017) - The Clinton LumberKings dropped their second game of the day to the South Bend Cubs falling 3-2 in the regularly scheduled Saturday night contest at Four Winds Field. The LumberKings (10-17) have now lost four straight on the road trip.
The LumberKings took the early lead, scoring a run in the top of the first inning. Luis Rengifo singled to start the game and moved to second on a ground out by Dimas Ojeda. Rengifo then stole third and came into score two batters later on a Nick Zammarelli III RBI ground out.
The lead did not hold up in another big inning allowed by LumberKings pitching. Danny Garcia, who shutout the Cubs (18-10) through the first two innings, allowed three runs to score in the bottom of the third. D.J. Wilson, Zach Short, and Brandon Cummins went back-to-back-to-back with one out hits to bring home two runs for the Cubs. Cummins had the big hit in the inning driving a two run double to left that put the Cubs on top for good. Another run was added on a Vimael Machin single.
Garcia (1-3) allowed no more runs to the Cubs in his six innings of work. The lefty's six innings of work were the most he has turned in this year, and he reached a new season-high for strikeouts with seven. The start was Garcia's first quality start of the season.
The LumberKings pulled to within one run in the top of the seventh inning. Nick Thurman singled and scored on a Rayder Ascanio single to right that was played into an error by Cubs right fielder Luis Ayala and allowed Thurman to score all the way from first base.
The LumberKings failed to get another runner on against Cubs reliever Matt Swarmer. Swarmer earned his first save of the year with four innings of relief work.
Dylan Cease earned his first win of the season a five inning outing. He allowed just one run on three hits, while walking one and striking out six. Cease (1-1) did allow Clinton to collect more than one hit in the same inning.
The LumberKings wrap up their six-game road trip with the third and final game of their series with the South Bend Cubs. Right-handed pitcher Brandon Miller (2-2, 3.65) will take the ball for Clinton and face Left-handed pitcher Joes Paulino (1-0, 4.95). First pitch is scheduled for 1:05 PM (CDT) with the pregame show beginning at 12:50 PM (CDT) on 100.3 FM WCCI.
