CLINTON, IA (August 14, 2017) - Nick Zammarelli III went 4-for-4 as the Clinton LumberKings dropped the Kane County Cougars 5-2 on Monday night at Ashford University Field. Clinton (21-29, 52-65) rode a three-run bottom of the seventh to a come from behind win.
Kane County (27-23, 66-51) scored the first two runs of the game to build a 2-0 lead but failed to score again. LumberKings starter Nick Wells allowed both Cougars runs to score during his six-inning outing and was given a no decision for his time out.
Trailing 2-0, the LumberKings tied the game with two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Zammarelli's third hit of the night tied the game for Clinton, when Bryson Brigman scored from second on the single to left.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, Clinton took the lead for good with a three-run rally. Johnny Slater singled off Cougars reliever Cody Clark to begin the inning and scored two batters later on a Joe Rizzo single to center. Zammarelli then capped the rally with his fourth hit of the night, an RBI single to center off Clark (0-2).
The lead for Clinton was held with strong relief work from Steven Moyers and Jeffeson Medina. Moyers (1-3) picked up his first win of the season for two plus innings of work that included a stretch of setting down six straight Cougars.
Moyers, who started the ninth inning, was relieved by Medina who earned his second save of the season for recording the final three out of the game.
The LumberKings will play game two of their four-game series with the Kane County Cougars on Tuesday night. Right-handed pitcher Ryne Inman (1-2, 8.20) will take the ball for Clinton and face the Cougars right-handed pitcher Riley Smith (1-0, 2.15). Game time is slated for 6:30 PM (C.D.T.) with the pregame show on 100.3 FM WCCI beginning at 6:15 PM, Erik Oas will be on the call. Fans whole bring two canned foods will receive a free general admission ticket as part of the Victory Center food drive. All game long fans can take part in "Sweet and Salty Tuesday" 50 cent popcorn and cotton candy.
