Marathon Men: Renegades fall 8-7 to Cyclones

WAPPINGERS FALLS, N.Y. (July 21, 2023) — The Hudson Valley Renegades and Brooklyn Cyclones exchanged leads late, but the Cyclones outlasted the Renegades 8-7 on Friday night at Heritage Financial Park.
The Renegades opened up the scoring, plating a run in each of the first three frames. In the first, Spencer Jones scored on a groundout by Christopher Familia. Spencer Henson clubbed his 10th home run of the season to begin the second, which extended the Renegades' advantage to 2-0.

Alex Ramirez doubled, stole third, and scored a two batters later on a Stanley Consuegra RBI single in the third to cut the deficit to 2-1.
Jones then led off the third with a double, before advancing to third on a wild pitch from Jordany Ventura. The next batter, Ben Cowles, hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score Jones and extend the ‘Gades lead to 3-1.
Brooklyn scored the next three runs which were scattered across three different innings. Rhylan Thomas plated Chase Estep with an RBI single in the fourth to cut the Renegades' lead to one. Brooklyn ended up tying the game in the sixth with a Ramirez RBI single, before taking their first lead of the contest on an inside-the-park home run from D’Andre Smith on a ball misplayed in right field in the seventh.
Hudson Valley quickly erased the one-run deficit and took a 5-4 lead in the bottom half of the seventh on a pair of run-scoring singles from Jones and Familia. Brooklyn tied the game again at five in the eighth on a William Lugo RBI double against Carlos Gómez. Gómez (2-3) later stranded Smith and Lugo in scoring position to keep the game tied.

In the bottom of the eighth, the first three men reached to load the bases for Jones who hit into a fielder’s choice to score Garcia and take a 6-5 lead over Brooklyn.
The Cyclones countered with a three-run top of the ninth, highlighted by a pair of RBI singles from Kevin Parada and Thomas.
Hudson Valley didn’t go down without a fight in the ninth after Familia led off with a double against Manny Rodriguez (3-3). Familia scored on an error from Junior Tilien which put the tying run on base. Eli Ankeney entered out of the bullpen and recorded the last two outs of the game to earn his first save of the season.
In his High-A debut, Brock Selvidge allowed two runs on eight hits and struck out three in 4.1 innings. The 18 hits allowed by Hudson Valley pitching were the second-most this season. The Greenville Drive tallied 19 against the ‘Gades back on April 29. At three hours and 47 minutes, Friday’s game was the longest played by the Renegades since the pitch clock began being enforced in 2022.
The Renegades and Cyclones continue their six-game series on Saturday night at Heritage Financial Park. First pitch is slated for 6:05 p.m. with coverage on the Renegades Baseball Network beginning at 5:45 p.m. Hudson Valley will send RHP Drew Thorpe (9-1, 2.27) to the mound opposite of RHP Joander Suarez (3-6, 6.17) for the Cyclones.
