Marcheco zaps Chiefs in weather-shortened 1-0 win

LANSING, Mich. – Jorge Marcheco fired 5 ⅔ scoreless innings and Daniel Bucciero drove in what proved to be the winning run in the first inning with an RBI single to power the Lansing Locos (23-29, 52-64) to a 1-0 win over the Peoria Chiefs (24-28, 56-62) in a shortened contest on Saturday night in front of 7,309 at JacksonⓇ Field™.

Lansing continues its strong play at home, winning 12 of its last 14 home games.

The Locos capitalized on early Peoria mistakes to score their first run in the first. Starter Jacob Odle hit Pedro Pineda with his first pitch of the game, and the speedster proceeded to steal second base before advancing to third on a throwing error by catcher Cade McGee. A Bucciero RBI single to left-center scored the only run of the ballgame.

Marcheco flashed in his seventh start of the season, blanking the Chiefs through 5 ⅔ innings, allowing four hits and two walks while striking out five.

“I feel like his fastball was playing really good,” catcher Dylan Fien said. “I feel like they had a really tough time getting on the fastball, given the speed of his slider and changeup.”

“I think it's the best one (start) of the year,” Marcheco said. “I have a good command with my fastball, and then I can keep my fastball up, and I did a good job.”

Marcheco said he needed this performance after the result of his last start. Against West Michigan last week, he surrendered five hits, six runs and three walks in his second start of the series.

“This starting, that's a great point for me for the next week,” Marcheco said.

The game was delayed and ultimately discontinued due to unplayable field conditions in the midst of Lansing’s first pitching change, coming with two outs and Peoria’s Ian Petrutz at second base in the top of the sixth.

Peoria had a pair of golden scoring opportunities in the fourth inning that were spoiled by Lansing’s defense. With one out and Ian Petrutz at third, Michael Dattalo hit a ground ball directly at third baseman Daniel Bucciero, who threw the ball to catcher Dylan Fien for a tag out of Petrutz at home plate. On the next at-bat, McGee knocked a double to left fielder Breyson Guedez, and Dattalo rounded the bases from first in an attempt to score. Instead, Guedez hit shortstop Tanner Marsh for the cutoff, and Marsh launched the ball to Fien for a second tag out at the dish.

Guedez and Jared Davis collected the other two Lansing hits, and Jake Reinisch drew a walk in the first inning to extend his on-base streak to 33 games.

The Lugnuts will finish off the series with Tucker Novotny on the mound Sunday, making his second start of the week. Right-hander Brian Holiday will make his High-A debut for Peoria.
