COLUMBIA, S.C. - After tossing 6 1/3 shutout frames on Friday night against Greenville, RiverDogs right-hander Alex Mauricio has been named the South Atlantic League's Pitcher of the Week for the period of August 20-26 as announced by the league office on Monday.
The Norfolk State product impressed in his seventh start of the season with the RiverDogs on Friday, facing one over the minimum and allowing just two total baserunners as he one-hit the Red Sox affiliate over his 6 1/3 scoreless innings. The 21-year-old worked with a runner in scoring position only once during the career-long outing, pitching around a leadoff double in the third and erasing a leadoff walk in the fifth with the aid of a double play ball.
Mauricio's Friday night gem is the latest addition in an impressive stretch for the former 27th round selection. The Midlothian, Virginia native has fired at least six scoreless frames in three of his last four starts and has yielded just one earned run over his last 24 innings of work. After being touched up for six or more runs in each of his first three starts after being called up from Staten Island, he has lowered his ERA to a season-low 4.82 with Charleston.
The award marks the second consecutive week in which a RiverDogs hurler has garnered the league's weekly accolades and the first time Charleston pitchers have received the award in back-to-back weeks since at least 2008. Righty Janson Junk was recognized for his five scoreless innings that played a role in Charleston's no-hitter on Thursday, August 16 in Delmarva.
Mauricio is the third Holy City hurler in total to be named Pitcher of the Week this season after Garrett Whitlock, now with the Tampa Tarpons, received the league's weekly accolades the first week of May.

The RiverDogs (59-69, 26-34) begin their final remaining road trip, starting a four-game set with the Columbia Fireflies, the Class A affiliate of the New York Mets, on Monday night at Spirit Communications Park. Right-hander Shawn Semple is scheduled to make his Dogs debut.
RiverDogs single-game tickets, including options to the Riley Park Club, are available for the remainder of the 2018 campaign, the club's 25th season as the RiverDogs and their "175th season in dog years." Ticket information can be secured by contacting the box office at (843) 577-DOGS (3647) or online at www.riverdogs.com/tickets.
