Eastlake, OH (July 18, 2018) - Keegan McGovern drove in five and the Clinton LumberKings coasted to a 9-4 win over the Lake County Captains on Wednesday night at Classic Park. McGovern went 3-for-4 with a home run, five RBIs, and a walk as the LumberKings (14-11, 53-42) ran their winning streak to five games.
Clinton had trouble solving Captains (12-14, 41-55) starter Jean Carlos Meija through the first three innings but would break a scoreless tie in the fourth. In Meija's (2-4) final inning of work the LumberKings sent eight men to the plate to score three runs and register their first three hits of the game.
Lake County immediately answered the three-run rally with a two-run home run from Elvis Perez in the bottom of the fourth. The home run was his third of the season and the only runs allowed by Clinton starter Randy Bell.
Bell (2-2) earned the win with a five-inning outing in which he surrendered five hits while walking two and striking out three.
The LumberKings added to their lead in the fifth inning. McGovern added his second and third RBIs of the night with a two-run single through the right side of the infield with the bases loaded.
Two more runs were tacked on by the LumberKings in the top of the seventh when three straight walks by Jonathan Teaney set the table for a Johnny Adams two-run double down the line in left.
McGovern then capped the LumberKings scoring with his fifth home run of the year, a two-run homer on top of the berm in left that put Clinton on top 9-2.
The LumberKings used just two pitchers in the game turning things over to Steven Moyers for the sixth inning. Over his four innings of work, Moyers earned his first save of the season and held the Captains to a ninth inning two-run home run from Jose Vicente, his tenth of the year.
The win is the fifth straight by the LumberKings and is their second longest winning streak of the season.
The LumberKings will meet the Lake County Captains for the second game of the three-game series on Thursday afternoon. Clinton will throw right-hander Ryne Inman (3-5, 5.05) while the Captains will counter with lefty Kirk McCarty (2-9, 4.86). Game time is slated for 10:00 AM (CDT).
