Medina shines in shutout win

Hartford, Conn. - The Somerset Patriots (65-44) earned their Minor League Baseball-leading 16th shutout win of the year with a 1-0 win over the Hartford Yard Goats (37-71) Wednesday night at Dunkin’ Donuts Park.

Somerset starting pitcher Luis Medina (W, 4-3) stole the show with seven innings of scoreless baseball. The right-hander scattered six hits and one walk over the seven shutout frames with five strikeouts. The needed just 51 pitches to work through his first five innings and only twice allowed a baserunner to reach third. The seven innings of work marked his longest outing as a Patriot.

The lone run in the ballgame came on an Oswald Peraza RBI single in the bottom of the third inning.

After Medina exited, Addison Russ (H, 2) and Nick Ernst (S, 3) tossed a pair of scoreless innings to complete the shutout. The Patriots bullpen has now allowed only one earned run over its last 24.2 innings (0.36 ERA) across the last seven games.

Hartford starter Karl Kaufmann (L, 1-11) allowed one run over 5.1 innings and suffered the loss.

Somerset and Hartford continue their six-game series Thursday night. First pitch at Dunkin’ Donuts Park is set for 6:05 pm.
