Mets southpaws Josh Walker and Andrew Mitchell combined to no-hit Reading in Double-A Binghamton's 2-0 win, sending the Rumble Ponies racing to the mound to celebrate the team's first no-hitter since 2019.
Walker (3-1) struck out four and walked one batter over six innings in his ninth start before Mitchell, a 26-year-old lefty out of Auburn, struck out one over three perfect frames to seal the seventh no-hitter in Binghamton franchise history.
Walker, the Mets' 37th-round pick in the 2017 Draft, threw 55 of his 79 pitches for strikes and faced 19. Mitchell needed 34 pitches to mow through the nine batters he faced at FirstEnergy Stadium. It was Binghamton's first no-hitter since Harol Gonzalez and Ryder Ryan combined to toss one on May 8, 2019 and just the second no-no for Bingo since 2006.
Binghamton gave its starter a lead in the fourth on Will Toffey's fifth home run of the year, a solo drive to right off Fightin Phils starter Francisco Morales (0-7). Mark Vientos, the Mets' No. 8 prospect, led off the sixth inning with his eighth homer. Manny Rodriguez and Carlos Cortes, the Mets' No. 17 prospect, both had multi-hit efforts.
The 26-year-old Walker, a New York native, pitched at the University of South Florida and the University of New Haven from 2014-17 before joining the Mets. He began the 2021 season with High-A Brooklyn, where he was 3-0, owned a 2.57 ERA and struck out 23 batters in 21 innings over four starts. The Mets promoted him to Double-A on May 24 and he has looked sharp since, striking out 32 with a 3.34 ERA in 29 2/3 innings over five appearances.
Mitchell, a New Orleans native, was the Mets' 14th-round pick in 2018 and has spent the season working out of Binghamton's bullpen -- he is 3-1 with a 2.42 ERA and has struck out 24 in 22 1/3 innings.
