METAIRIE, LA --Corey Ray and Jacob Nottingham homered to help lead the Missions to a series opening 5-3 win over the New Orleans Baby Cakes Saturday night, as San Antonio matched its high-water mark by moving six games over .500 by winning for the third straight night.
Jimmy Nelson made his first rehab start and second appearance for the Missions. The right-hander served up a pair of first inning solo homers before retiring eight straight.
Nelson worked out of a fourth inning jam before reliever Jake Petricka bailed him out of a bases loaded pickle in the sixth inning.
Nelson showed better command of his pitches compared to his initial outing last Sunday. His fastball velocity consistently hovered around 94 MPH.
Petricka and Alex Wilson combined to cover the final 3 2/3 innings, with Wilson notching the save while fanning five.
Ray's three-run homer highlighted a four-run second inning for the Missions. It was his second longball in as many nights after failing to collect and extra base hit across his first 15 games.
Nottingham also added a double and a pair of walks to complete a perfect night at the plate.
San Antonio is in the midst of playing eight straight games against the Baby Cakes, with the previous four contests having taken place at Wolff Stadium.
