After a tough loss in extra innings to close out their road trip in Durham, Toledo returned home looking to get back on the right foot in front of the friendly crowd.
Driven by a three-RBI day from Efren Navarro and a strong outing from Buck Farmer, the Mud Hens were able to accomplish just that with a 5-3 victory over the Louisville Bats.
Farmer was on the bump for Toledo and pitched well, throwing seven strong with three earned runs and five strikeouts.
Jackson Stephens got the nod for Louisville and was able to succeed against Toledo once again. He lasted six innings while allowing two earned runs and struck out five batters.
Coming off of a five earned run outing against Gwinnett his last time out Farmer was able find his rhythm early in this one, retiring the Bats in short order in the top of the first.
Despite his success against the Mud Hens in his last start, Jackson Stephens got into trouble early. Walks to JaCoby Jones, Navarro and Jason Krizan loaded the bases with two outs, but a flyout was able to get him out of the jam without any damage.
Farmer was bale to work quickly through the 2nd and third innings, allowing just a single to Brandon Dixon. Dixon continued his domniance over Toledo as of late by building on 4-for-5 night on May 7th.
Stephens was able to match him just as well, with two consecutive 1-2-3 innings of his own to cruise through the second and third.
In the top of the fourth, Farmer was able to make quick work of Louisville once more, highlighted by a diving catch in center by Jones to continue his impressive game.
Jason Krizan was able to knock the Mud Hens first hit of the game through in the fourth with a single. After an Omar Infante fielder's choice and a double play ball though, Stephens was once again able to roll through.
Farmer got into a bit of trouble of his own as the top of the fifth came around, as two singles put runners on first and second with only one out. A timely double-play ball was able to get him out of it as the game reached its halfway point.
The Mud Hens finally broke through in the bottom half of the inning, as Argenis Diaz led off with a single and Alex Presley eventually followed up with a hit by pitch. With runners at first and second, Navarro laced one down the third base line for a double that scored both and made the game 2-0.
Diaz and Infante were able to reach base once again in the top of the sixth, though the Mud Hens left them there as it the game turned into the seventh inning.
After falling behind in the bottom of the fifth, the Bats were finally able to strike in the seventh. A double by Zach Walters got them started and a walk put two runners on. Rob Brantly drove in Walters to make it 2-1, while Dilson Herrera followed up with a single of his own to tie it up. With one final single by Beau Amaral, Louisville took a 3-2 lead.
It didn't take Toledo long to make a comeback, as Jones reached base for his third time of the game with a double and Navarro drove him in to tie it up. John Hicks singled and an Infante single later made it 4-3.
Kyle Ryan relieved Farmer in the 8th and was able to keep things on track, facing just four batters and getting out of the inning without a run.
Armed with a one-run lead going into the bottom of the eighth, the Mud Hens were able to add yet another run. Diaz singled for his third hit of the game and a wild pitch moved him to second. Presley roped a double to right field to make it 5-3.
Arcenio Leon entered the game for the Mud Hens in the ninth and slammed the door to deliver the two-run victory.
The Mud Hens return to action on Tuesday morning in Toledo against Louisville. William Cuevas gets the start for the Mud Hens; first pitch is scheduled for 10:35 am.
