NASHVILLE, TN - The Nashville Sounds (1-1) made the most of 11 hits and one Iowa error to sink the I-Cubs (1-1) 8-2, Friday at First Tennessee Park.
The game was tied after two and one-half innings but the Sounds ran away with the game after a one-run third, a two-run fourth and a three-run fifth. Duane Underwood Jr. limited the damage through three laborious innings before running into trouble in the fourth. The righty was chased with one out in the frame after a Carlos Tocci RBI single and left with runners first and second.
Brian Duensing, making his 2019 debut, allowed one inherited runner to score and was hit by a Chase d'Arnaud two-run homer in the fifth. Eli White punched an RBI triple off the lefty to push the Sounds to a 7-1 lead after five.
A rocky sixth gave the Sounds another run as righty Matt Carasiti opened the inning with a hit by pitch, single and second hit by pitch. Carasiti was able to induce a double play with bases loaded, but Nashville pushed another run in before the inning closed.
Donnie Dewees gave the I-Cubs some offense in the seventh with a solo home run, but the gap was too large to overcome.
Underwood (0-1) took the loss, while Ariel Jurado (1-0) grabbed the victory as he limited Iowa to one run through 5.0 frames.
