Ninth Inning Rush Leads Indians to Win in Final Game of the Season

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. – Mitch Jebb smacked an RBI single into right field for the lead in the ninth inning and Duce Gourson later followed with a two-run home run as the Indianapolis Indians defeated the Gwinnett Stripers, 9-6, on Sunday afternoon at Gwinnett Field. Indy finished the season with a 75-75 record. Jebb collected two stolen bases to surpass 100 in his career.

Derek Berg doubled to open the ninth for the Indians (44-31, 75-75) and Mike Jarvis moved him to third with a sacrifice bunt. Jebb then tomahawked a high pitch over the infield for a 7-6 lead. Jebb stole second, got thrown out trying to steal third and Jesus Castillo drew a walk. Gourson then launched his sixth homer of the campaign for a 9-6 lead at Gwinnett (38-37, 76-73).

The Stripers scored first with one run in the first inning and Indy countered with a three-run second frame to take the lead. Berg drove in two with a double and Jebb singled to bring home a third run. Jebb hit a sacrifice fly in the fourth for a 4-1 lead. Jhostynxon Garcia extended the lead to 5-1 with a moonshot in the fifth, hitting a solo homer 443 feet for the farthest-tracked ball of his career. An RBI groundout from Berg in the sixth tacked on one more for Indy.

The Stripers began their comeback and scored five unanswered runs to tie the game, 6-6, before the Indians made their mark in the ninth.

Hunter Barco tossed 5.0 innings of one-run ball (0er) for Indianapolis, giving way to the bullpen. Brandon Neeck (W, 4-3) authored a scoreless eighth inning and Justin Meis (S, 2) retired all three batters he faced to end the contest. James Karinchak (L, 4-4) allowed the final three Indy runs on the hill for Gwinnett.
