Offense carries LumberKings to series split

CLINTON, IA (May 29, 2017) - Yojhan Quevedo drove home five runs for the Clinton LumberKings in an 11-3 win over the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers on Monday afternoon at Ashford University field. Brandon Miller backed the offensive eruption with a strong start, striking out eight to set a new professional career-high for punch outs.
The LumberKings (20-28) raced out of the gate to claim an early two run lead in the bottom of the first inning. Rayder Ascanio drew a leadoff walk and Anthony Jimenez as hit by a pitch setting the table for the middle of the lineup. Quevedo drove home his first of five on the day with an RBI single to center that scored Ascanio for the first run of the game. Joe Rizzo then capped the rally with an RBI single to score Jimenez.
Braden Webb started for Wisconsin (23-25) and struggled in his 3.1 inning outing allowing nine runs, all earned on seven hits while walking three and striking out two.
Webb (1-4) allowed most of his runs to score in the bottom of the second when the LumberKings rallied for four runs. Gareth Morgan drew a walk, stole second, and scored the first run of the inning on an RBI single from Luis Rengifo. The big blow of the inning came from Quevedo who slugged a three-run homer that hit off the roof of the Coors Light pavilion in left for his second home run of the season.
The LumberKings continued to add on, scoring three runs in the fourth, and single runs in the sixth and eighth innings. Luis Liberato hit the LumberKings second home run of the game in the fourth beginning the three-run rally with a solo home run to left for his fifth home run of the season.
The offense was more than enough for LumberKings starter Brandon Miller. The righty shutout the Timber Rattlers over his first four innings before finally surrendering two runs in the fifth inning.
Trever Morrison broke up the Miller (6-2) shutout with a two-run homer to left for his third home run of the season. Wisconsin tacked on an unearned run in the top of the sixth inning for their final tally of the day.
Miller struck out eight to set a new professional career high for strikeouts. His six innings of work were enough to earn him his sixth win of the season, most by a LumberKings pitcher this year.
Jeffeson Medina followed Miller and threw a shutout inning of relief before Tim Viehoff made his second appearance of the year out of the bullpen and recorded the final six outs to preserve the LumberKings win and split the series two games apiece.
The LumberKings will now hit the road for a three-game road trip and series with the Beloit Snappers. Right-handed pitcher Ronal Dominguez (0-2, 3.53) will take the ball for Clinton and face Beloit's left-handed pitcher Dalton Sawyer (4-2, 2.00). First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 PM (CDT) with the pregame show beginning at 6:15 PM (CDT) on 100.3 FM WCCI Erik Oas is on the call.
