The Oklahoma Sooners will open their baseball season on Feb. 14-16 at Blue Wahoos Stadium carrying high expectations and national ranking in four collegiate polls.
The inaugural Wahoos Classic, presented by WEAR-3 TV, features Oklahoma against Virginia in a marquee pairing on the first weekend of the 2020 NCAA Division I baseball season.
The teams will play a three-game, three-day series Friday-Sunday at the bayfront stadium with tickets available for just $10 in advance, $25 for a three-game weekend pass.
The Sooners, who are ranked No. 19 by Baseball America, No. 16 by Perfect Game, are seeking a 39th post-season trip in program history. They return eight of nine starters and have two pitchers ranked among Baseball America's top 100 college players.
Virginia captivated the collegiate baseball world in winning the 2015 College World Series championship by defeating Vanderbilt, which won the 2019 CWS title.
The Wahoos Classic is a first-of-its kind tournament at Blue Wahoos Stadium, enabling area baseball fans to see two college programs with high profiles competing in a debut event to begin both teams' 2020 schedules.
There will be an array of talent on both teams, led by the pitching staffs.
Oklahoma reliever Jason Ruffcom is a third-team Collegiate Baseball All-American. Starting pitcher Cade Cavalli, a 6-foot-4 righthander, is rated by Baseball America as the No. 27 overall player. The Sooners' Levi Prater, a lefthander, is ranked No. 100.
Oklahoma is ranked No. 30 in the Collegiate Baseball poll, No. 24 by Division I Baseball.com, in addition to the Baseball America and Perfect Game rankings in the top 20.
The Sooners have reached the College World Series 10 times, winning the 1994 championship. They've had
Virginia, which received votes in the Collegiate Baseball poll, features left-handed pitcher Andrew Abbott, ranked No. 75 among all players by Baseball America.
The Cavaliers finished 32-24 last season and will bringing 13 returning pitchers into the 2020 season.
