BELOIT, WI (August 10, 2017) - A two-run Beloit Snappers bottom of the fourth inning was enough to drop the Clinton LumberKings 4-1 on Thursday night at Harry Pohlman Field. Clinton (18-27, 49-63) tallied just one unearned run in the game to fall in the series opener.
The Snappers (26-19, 56-58) used three pitchers to hold the LumberKings to just one run. Starter, Kyle Twomey earned the win for Beloit with five innings of work, allowing just four hits, walking three, and striking out five.
Twomey (2-2) allowed the LumberKings only run of the game in the top of the third. Joseph Rosa reached on an error to lead off the inning and wasted no time moving to third on two consecutive steals. Joe Rizzo then chased him home with an RBI double behind the bag at third.
The LumberKings run had tied the score after Beloit tallied the game's first run with a Jesus Lopez solo home run to left, his first of the season. LumberKings starter Ryne Inman allowed the home run and pitched well until his final inning of work in the bottom of the fourth.
Inman (1-2) struggled to control the strike zone in his final inning of work. The righty walked three to load the bases and was then replaced by Tim Viehoff. Viehoff could not stop the bleeding at first, allowing an RBI single to Josh Vidales, and then a bases loaded walk to Mike Martin.
Trailing 3-1, the LumberKings would tally just two more hits on the night. Jesus Zambrano threw three shutout innings for the Snappers to earn his second hold of the year and Ty Damron picked up his second save for setting down the LumberKings in the top of the ninth.
Beloit scored the final run of the game off Wyatt Mills. Luke Persico led off with a double, moved to third on a wild pitch, and then scored on a safety squeeze from Edwin Diaz.
The LumberKings will play game two of their three-game series with the Beloit Snappers on Thursday night. Left-handed pitcher Danny Garcia (6-10, 46.14) will take the ball for Clinton and face the Snappers right-handed pitcher Matt Milburn (6-9, 4.21). Game time is slated for 7:00 PM (C.D.T.) with the pregame show on 100.3 FM WCCI beginning at 6:45 PM, Erik Oas will be on the call.
The LumberKings return to Ashford University Field on Monday, August 14 with a four-game home stand against the Kane County Cougars.
