A dominating outing by right-hander Chris Paddack paved the way for San Antonio's 1-0, series-sweeping win over Corpus Christi Wednesday night at Wolff Stadium.
Paddack, who was making his fourth start at the Double-A level and just his second at The Wolff, quickly showed the Hooks why he's considered one of the top prospects in the San Diego system. In his first three innings Wednesday, Paddack fanned multiple Hooks each frame.
After working around a two-out Taylor Jones double in the fourth, Paddack (3-1) dodged further trouble when he fanned Randy César. Alex De Goti's single in the fifth was erased by a caught stealing. Those would be the only hits allowed by Paddack, who did not walk a batter, while fanning eight over five and two-thirds innings.
San Antonio would score the only run it would need in the fourth against lefty Framber Valdez when Peter Van Gansen scored Austin Allen from second with a single to center. Valdez (3-4) fanned nine of his own in four and two-thirds innings of work.
Following Paddack, the Missions received another sterling effort from righty Miguel Diaz, who allowed just two hits over the final three and a third innings, notching his first save in the process. Both of the hits against Diaz came in the ninth, but the hurler escaped the jam by getting Jones to bang into a game-ending double play.
San Antonio (19-13, 61-41) continues its homestand Thursday on Metro PCS Dollar Night presented by News 4 San Antonio and Cox Media Group. Thursday marks the return of the Flying Chanclas de San Antonio as they welcome in Frisco in the first of four. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM. Right-hander Cal Quantrill (6-5, 5.21) will get the ball for the Chanclas in Thursday's series opener, while the RoughRiders counter with lefty Yohander Méndez (0-0, 7.11).
