Patience and Pitching Pull Augusta Past Pelicans

Pinero and Angeles Dazzle on the Mound as Free Passes Mount in Win

NORTH AUGUSTA, SC: Yander Pinero and Gensi Angeles combined to allow just one run and two hits across eight impressive innings, while the offense used a patient approach to give the Augusta GreenJackets (30-25, 65-56) a 6-1 over the Myrtle Beach Pelicans (19-36, 46-73) Wednesday night.

The two young righties have both struggled in their introductions to Single-A ball this month, but both broke out in a big way this evening. Pinero, after not making it out of the first inning last week, rolled through four strong frames to start the day. His lone blemish was a solo homer from Darlyn De Leon to lead off the third, both the only hit and run of the day for Myrtle Beach.

As good as Pinero was, Gensi Angeles was even better, as the young arm has thrived in his newfound relief role. Angeles faced 12 batters, and retired all 12, striking out five men and completely silencing the Pelicans. Angeles earned his first Single-A win for the trouble, snagging the decision away from Pinero.

Offensively, the GreenJackets were bolstered by a bevy of walks and one big fly. After Myrtle Beach took the lead in the top of the third, Augusta answered back immediately, as Yamvier Carrero left the yard on the first pitch of the bottom half to tie things up against Hayden Frank. The breakout came the next inning, as Augusta used three walks, two hits, a wild pitch, and an error to score four runs that chased Frank and stole the lead for good.

Though Augusta’s offense mustered just one extra run in the back half of the game, the lead was enough to carry the day. Cristobal Abreu followed Angeles’ brilliance with a 1-2-3 9^th, slamming the door on the Pelicans. All in all, the GreenJackets retired the final 19 hitters of the game, and allowed just one hit for the only time this year.

With a comfortable win in their back pocket, the GreenJackets look to build off of tonight’s momentum tomorrow night, as they face Kevin Camacho, who has struggled since returning from the Injured List. Landon Beidelschies gets the ball for Augusta, continuing his quest for his first win of the second half.
