Bridgewater, New Jersey- The Somerset Patriots (37-20) and the Erie SeaWolves (34-24) split a doubleheader at TD Bank Ballpark on Friday evening before 5,118 fans. The Patriots took the first game 9-2, while Erie took a rain-shortened game two 4-1 with 6.1 innings played.

A grand slam by Oswaldo Cabrera (11) highlighted a six-run third inning for the Patriots. It marked his third home run of the series and the first grand slam for the team in over two years.

The Patriots added a three-run fourth inning on an RBI double from Donny Sands and a two-run single from Michael Beltre.

Beltre finished game one 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI. Isiah Gilliam and Oswald Peraza each collected an RBI in the game as well.

Elvis Peguero (W,1-0) picked up the win in his first outing in Somerset. The righty tossed 2.1 innings and struck out a batter in relief of starter JP Sears. Sears went 4.2 innings and allowed two earned runs and struck out four. Elvin Rodriguez (L, 2-1) allowed six runs over 2.2 innings to take the loss.

The Patriots’ lone run in the second game came on a Dermis Garcia solo blast (15) while trailing 4-0 in the second inning.

Erie’s Spencer Torkelson hit a two-run home run (7) in the first inning to start the scoring, while Riley Green added a two-out, two-run double in the second to put the SeaWolves ahead 4-0.

The game was called with one out in the bottom of the sixth inning after a heavy downpour forced the tarp on the field and prevented play for the rest of the evening.

Jesus Rodriguez (W, 1-0) yielded one run over 5.1 innings to earn the win. Hayden Wesneski (L, 1-3) took the loss after he allowed four runs on seven hits and three strikeouts over five innings.

The Patriots and SeaWolves face off again tomorrow at TD Bank Ballpark with a 7:05 pm game.
