Pelicans Swept By Woodpeckers In Twin-Bill

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (August 23, 2026). – The Myrtle Beach Pelicans (18-35, 45-72) dropped both games of the doubleheader against the Fayetteville Woodpeckers (32-20, 64-53) 6-2 in game one, and 6-1 in game two. With the loss, the Pelicans were swept by the Woodpeckers in the weeklong series 0-6, and in the season series 0-12.

GAME ONE BOX SCORE

The Pelicans started the scoring in the bottom of the second. Jhoander Irigoyen and Corey Nunez were walked to start the inning. In the next at-bat, a wild pitch prompted a stolen base attempt from Irigoyen that was coupled with a throwing error to third allowed the first run to score. That gave the Birds’ a 1-0 lead.

Fayetteville took the lead in the top of the fourth. Kam Durnin was plunked and then moved to third on a single from Owen Nowak. A batter later, Aaron Piasecki lined a two-run single to give the Woodpeckers a 2-1 lead.

The Woodpeckers tacked on two more runs in the top of the fifth. Rashawn Galloway was hit-by-pitch to start the inning. Luis De Leon followed with a single. After Durnin was walked, Logan Hughes was plunked to bring in another run, making the game 3-1. Then on the throw from the catcher back to the pitcher, De Leon stole home to extend the score to 4-1.

The Pelicans struck back in the bottom of the fifth. Jose Silva singled and then scored on a Juan Cabada RBI double to cut the deficit to 4-2.

Fayetteville brought home two more runs in the top of the seventh, capped off by an RBI double from Hughes to bring the score to 6-2.

RHP Jesus Carrera (1-4, 4.83) received the win for the Woodpeckers. RHP Riely Hunsaker (4-4, 5.28) was tagged with the loss for the Pelicans.

GAME TWO BOX SCORE

Trailing the Woodpeckers 2-0 in the bottom of the fourth, Cubs 7th overall prospect Caden Sorrell (2) launched a solo-home run to cut the deficit in half 2-1.

Fayetteville started the scoring in the top of the first. With runners on second and third, Carlos Cauro hit a sacrifice fly that brought home Hughes to give the Woodpeckers a 1-0 advantage.

The Woodpeckers put up another run in the top of the fourth on a solo home run from Kevin Alvarez (11) to stretch the lead to 2-0.

Fayetteville added four more runs in the top of the sixth, capped off by a solo home run from Hughes (2) to make the score 6-1.

RHP Brady Thomas (1-0, 3.38) received the win for the Woodpeckers. RHP Freddy Rodriguez (0-3, 11.00) was tagged with the loss for the Pelicans.

Myrtle Beach will have the day off tomorrow before hitting the road on Tuesday, August 25 against the Augusta GreenJackets (Single-A Braves) at SRP Park. First pitch is slated for 6:35 PM. Both team’s starting pitchers have yet to be announced.
