CORPUS CHRISTI - The Cardinals landed three runs in the second inning and received a strong start from lefty Braden Davis Friday night as Springfield knocked off the Hooks, 4-1, before 3,762 fans at Whataburger Field.
The Hooks, who need victories Saturday and Sunday to force a split of the six-game series, were held to nine singles and three walks while stranding 10.
Alejandro Torres, making his second career start in his 99th pro appearance, pitched the first two innings of a bullpen game for Corpus Christi. Cade McGee homered to start the Springfield second. Tre Richardson III and Jon Jon Gazdar advanced the visitor's cause with back-to-back doubles.
The Hooks notched their lone marker in unearned fashion in the home half. Brandon Forrester coaxed a two-out walk, advanced to second on a wild pitch, and then sprinted home on an infield hit by Tyler Whitaker and a bobble by the second baseman McGee.
Andrew Marrero, Railin Perez, Amilcar Chirinos, and Colby Langford combined for seven innings of one-run relief, striking out 12 against three walks
Marrero and Perez each fired two shutout frames, and all of five of Langford's outs came via strikeouts.
Will Bush and Forrester paced the Hooks offense as both went 2-for-3 with a walk.
