Headlining the Missions' selections is Phillip Wellman, who was named the Texas League's Manager of the Year. The 55-year-old skipper guided the Missions to a South Division first half title, the club's first division crown since 2011. Wellman also earned his 1,000^th win of his managerial career earlier this season when San Antonio beat Northwest Arkansas 5-4 in 14 innings on April 13 at Wolff Stadium.
San Antonio enters Friday tied with Springfield for the best overall record in the TL at 73-56. Wellman, who grew up in San Antonio and played at Madison High School, will be taking a team to the playoffs for the seventh time in his managerial career. Wellman joins Rich Dauer (2013), Doug Dascenzo (2011), Dave Brundage (2003), Ron Roenicke (1997) and Tony Pacheco (1973) as San Antonio managers to earn the league's top honor.
Luis Urías was selected as the shortstop for the league's Post-Season All-Star squad. In 108 games with the Missions this season, the 20-year-old infielder is batting .297 (121-for-407) with 19 doubles, four triples, three homers, 35 RBI and 74 runs scored. Urias enters play leading the TL in OBP (.397) as well as ranking T-2^nd in runs, 3^rd in walks (63) and 7^th in AVG.
San Antonio placed two pitchers on the Post-Season All-Star team in right-handers Brett Kennedy and Trey Wingenter. Kennedy is 12-7 with a 3.65 ERA in 24 starts for the Missions this season, his first at the Double-A level. The former Fordham University star leads the league in wins and is second in both strikeouts (129) and highest SO/9 IP ratio (8.89).
Wingenter notched his league-leading 19^th save of the season in Thursday night's game one win over Frisco. In 46 appearances with the Missions this season, the Huntsville, AL native is 2-0 with a 2.18 ERA and a K:BB of 61:19 over 45.1 innings.
San Antonio begins a four-game series with Corpus Christi tonight at 7:05 PM.
