DES MOINES - The Iowa Cubs (21-24) notched their second shutout of the season with a 5-0 victory over the Reno Aces (28-19) Wednesday at Principal Park. Iowa's last shutout win came on Opening Day at Oklahoma City.
Iowa used five pitchers to put together the winning effort. Juan Paniagua got into some trouble in the first to start the game and loaded the bases with two outs. The righty, making his second start of the season, got out of the inning unscathed and did not allow a base runner through the remainder of his three-inning outing.
Miguel Mejia, Conor Mullee, Dylan Floro and Justin Grimm made up the relief effort for the I-Cubs. The quartet combined to allow four hits over six innings with two walks and two strikeouts. Mejia (2-0) snagged the win, while former Iowa Cub Eric Jokisch (3-1) was handed the loss.
Iowa tallied 12 hits in the game while holding the Aces to five. John Andreoli set the tone with a double to leadoff the first and eventually came around to score on a sacrifice fly from Mark Zagunis. The I-Cubs pushed another run across in the third before Ali Solis doubled Iowa's advantage with a two-run bomb to center field in the sixth. The I-Cubs added insurance by plating another in the seventh on an RBI single from Stephen Bruno.
Bruno contributed a 3-for-4 game, while Andreoli, Solis and Elliot Soto each tabbed two hits on the day.
The I-Cubs and Aces go head-to-head at Principal Park tomorrow at 6:38 p.m. on Mug Club night. For more information or tickets, visit www.iowacubs.com.
