CLINTON, IA (June 5, 2019) - Pitching thrilled for the Clinton LumberKings on Wednesday night at NelsonCorp Field and enough offense led to a 2-1 win over the Cedar Rapids Kernels. Tanner Andrews started for Clinton (29-28) and combined with Jake Walters to strikeout 13 Kernels (29-29) batters.
Andrews (1-2) earned his first win of the season with five strong innings of work. He allowed the only Cedar Rapids run of the night in the top of the first inning. Gilberto Celestino homered with one out in the frame - his fourth of the year - and the only Cedar Rapids run.
Andrews ended his night surrendering three hits while walking one and striking out five.
The LumberKings scored their only runs of the night in the bottom of the fourth. Kernels starter Austin Schulfer struck out the first batter of the inning before allowing a single to Jerar Encarnacion and hitting JD Osborne with a pitch. Bubba Hollins then singled home the first run of the inning and Connor Grant capped the rally with a single to left center.
The two runs would be enough for Clinton as Andrews and Walters worked the final eight innings without allowing more than one runner on in an inning.
Schulfer (4-3) was given the loss for his five innings out. He surrendered six hits while walking none and striking out six.
Walters earned the save for Clinton with four innings of work and allowed no runs, just one hit, and walked none while striking out eight.
The LumberKings will meet the Cedar Rapids Kernels for the final game of their three-game series Thursday night. Clinton will throw RHP Humberto Mejia (5-0, 2.29) while the Kernels will go with lefty Kody Funderburk (0-0, 0.00).
