Poole’s Big Punch Pushes Charleston Past Augusta

North Augusta, SC – The Charleston RiverDogs surged for seven late-inning runs to earn a 7-5 victory over the Augusta GreenJackets in their series opener on Tuesday night at SRP Park.

Augusta opened scoring early when Yamvier Carrero rolled an RBI single to left to make it 1-0. They added on two more in the sixth to jump out to a 3-0 advantage.

Augusta starter Derek Vartanian was stellar across his first six frames, not allowing a run and fanning six. However, after he came out for the seventh, the RiverDogs began to rally when Taitn Gray and Dean Moss notched singles to place runners at the corners.

With one out, Andres Torres grounded an RBI single to right to cut the deficit to 3-1. The knock marked the first of Torres’ Single-A career.

The next hitter was Tom Poole who demolished a three-run homer to right that flipped the score and gave Charleston a 4-3 lead.

They added on two more in the eighth when Brady Marget delivered a sacrifice fly and Dean Moss lined an RBI single to center. Over his last six games, Moss is 12-for-24.

Charleston struck for one more in the top of the ninth on an error before the GreenJackets rallied for two more in the bottom of the frame, capping scoring at 7-5.

Starter Alex Wallace set the tone with four innings of one-run ball. Reliever Brayden Jones was strong, tossing two scoreless frames to pass the baton to Riley Stanford who slammed the door.

After clinching the Carolina League South first half title, the RiverDogs have secured a spot in the 2026 postseason, presented by Nucor Steel Berkeley. The best-of-three Division Series begins on Tuesday, September 8. Thanks to their first-half division title, the RiverDogs are guaranteed to host Game 2, and, if necessary, Game 3, at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park on September 10 and 11.
