In Totality: On the day of the first total solar eclipse to go coast to coast across the United States in nearly 100 years, the Intimidators (A, White Sox) look to mimic this astronomical anomaly in Monday's game against the Suns (A, Nationals) to wrap up a 4-game series. Kannapolis sends to the mound right-hander Luis Martinez against Hagerstown's Weston Davis. The Intimidators can secure a series win on Monday after taking two of the first three games in this set. Kannapolis has secured a season-series victory over Hagerstown, winning 10 of the first 13 games between the two squads. Monday's game is the final game between the two teams in the regular season.
Intimidators' Shining Starter: Luis Martinez, 22, makes his 12th start with Kannapolis and 16th overall in 2017 as he faces the Suns for the seventh time in his career and first time this season. The Intimidators' all-time wins leads (19 from 2015-17) is coming off 10 strikeouts over 6.0 innings to match his career-high in a road win at Lakewood on Aug. 16. He has struck out 78 over 76.0 IP this season between Kannapolis and Class A-Advanced Winston-Salem. Prior to rejoining Kannapolis for the Second Half, he went 0-2 with a 9.00 ERA in five games (four starts) with Winston-Salem.
Looking to Overshadow: Weston Davis, 21, makes his ninth start for Hagerstown and 12th of the season in the Nationals organization. The right-hander made two starts in April before going on the Disabled List on April 17. He made a rehab appearance with the GCL Nats and two more with Short-Season Auburn before returning to the Suns on July 14. That day he failed to get out of the second inning, which has now happened twice to Davis since returning to the Suns. He is coming off 5.0 scoreless innings on Aug. 16 to earn a road win at Hickory, striking out seven and walking two while working around four hits. The Suns selected Davis in the 11th round of the June 2014 First-Year Player Draft out of Manatee College in Bradenton, Fla. This is his first season in the Class A South Atlantic League.
Eclipsing the Suns: Zach Remillard's sac-fly provided the winning run as Kannapolis eclipsed the Suns, 3-2 in 11 innings, on Sunday afternoon. With the game tied 2-2 since the fifth, the Intimidators manufactured a run in the 11th. Mitch Roman singled with one out in the 11th and stole second base - his eighth swiped bag of the season. After Phil Morse uncorked a wild pitch to put Roman on third, Remillard lifted a ball into right field to score the tie-breaking run. J.B. Olson (1-0) earned the win, tossing 2.0 scoreless extra innings, working around a hit and two walks. Morse (0-2) took the loss, allowing a run on two hits while striking out five over 2.0 innings. The Intimidators trailed 2-1 before Casey Schroeder belted a game-tying home run (3), a solo shot to lead off the fifth inning. Schroeder finished 1-for-4. Alex Call continued his strong series in Hagerstown, going 2-for-5 with a pair of doubles and an RBI. Gavin Sheets, Roman, and Remillard also each collected two hits.
Daylight will Cease: Pitcher Dylan Cease, whom the White Sox acquired from the Cubs in the Jose Quintana trade in July, tossed 5.0 innings and worked around two runs and four hits while striking out six and walking two in a no decision on Sunday. Kannapolis scored two runs while Cease was on the mound, the most support he has received since the trade. Prior to Sunday, the Intimidators scored four total runs in his six starts, only two of which came with him pitching.
Extra-Special Occasion: Kannapolis won in extras on Sunday, 3-2 in 11 at Hagerstown, for the team's first extra-innings win of the Second Half. The Intimidators last won in extras on June 6 when Kannapolis needed 16 innings to beat Lakewood, 2-1, at FirstEnergy Park. Kannapolis is now 5-9 in extra-inning games this season including 4-4 on the road.
A Sunny September: Kannapolis has secured its first post-season berth since 2009 by winning the SAL Northern Division First Half Championship. The Intimidators are home on Friday, Sept. 8 at 7:05 p.m. for Game 2 of the Division Championship Series against the winner of the Second Half in the Best-of-3 series. Kannapolis would host Game 3 (if necessary) that Saturday, Sept. 9 at 7:05 p.m. Should the Intimidators advance to the SAL Championship Series, Games 1 and 2 of the Best-of-5 set would be in Kannapolis on Sept. 11 and 12.
Dark in the Park: Multiple teams across the country are hosting games around Monday's solar eclipse, starting on the west coast when the Short-Season Salem-Keizer Volcanoes get underway at 9:35 a.m. PDT and pause the game for totality at 10:17 a.m., which will mark the first ever eclipse delay in baseball history. The Bowling Green Hot Rods 10:35 a.m. CDT will be paused for the eclipse at 1:27 p.m., and the Nashville Sounds will host a viewing party at their ballpark before their game. South Atlantic League teams Greenville, Columbia, and Charleston all have games around the eclipse, with both the Drive and Fireflies starting at 1:05 p.m. with expected eclipse delays of their own at 2:38 p.m. and 2:41 p.m., respectively. The RiverDogs game starts at 4:05 p.m., after their eclipse viewing at The Joe.
Broadcast Information: All home and select road games will be broadcast live on the Kannapolis Intimidators Baseball Network online at IntimidatorsBaseball.com and via the TuneIn Radio App with Josh Feldman, now in his seventh season as the "Voice of the Intimidators." Phil Constantino will handle play-by-play during weekend home games.
