The Danville Braves (31-30) overcame a late five run deficit to defeat the Pulaski Yankees (38-22) by a 7-6 score in 10 innings on Thursday night at Calfee Park.
Griffin Benson was the hero of the night for the Braves. He homered in the 9th to even the score at 6-6 and singled in the game winning run in the top of the 10th. He finished 3-5 with two RBI and two runs scored.
The big inning came in the top of the 8th when the Braves tallied four runs off of Yankees' reliever Garrett Whitlock to cut their deficit to 6-5. He was charged with the blown save after pitching two innings and surrendering five earned runs on eight hits.
Benson and Raysheandall Michel opened the 8th with back to back singles before Drew Waters doubled to score Benson to make it 6-2. Derian Cruz followed with a base hit that plated Michel to make it a 6-3 game. Waters scored on a sac fly from Kevin Maitan to cut it to 6-4.
Maitan later scored on a single up the middle by Hagen Owenby to put Danville within one run.
Danville tied the game in the top of the 9th after Benson sent the first pitch of the inning onto Pierce Avenue for his first homer of the season.
Benson struck again in the top of 10th with a single to left that allowed Justin Smith to cross the plate and give Danville a 7-6 lead.
Braves' reliever Taylor Hyssong shut the door on the Yankees in the bottom of the 9th in route to earning his first save of the season.
Yankees' relief pitcher Anderson Severino (1-1) was tagged with the loss after giving up the game winning run on Benson's RBI single in the 10th.
Frederick Cuevas and Ricky Surum combined for five of the Yankees nine hits.
Evan Alexander's two run homer in the bottom of the 7th opened up a 6-1 lead but the Yankees bullpen squandered a late lead for the second consecutive night.
The Yankees will look to avoid being swept in the series finale on Friday night. First pitch is slated for 7pm.
