San Bernardino, CA - After letting a late lead slip away on Friday, the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes held on for a victory on Saturday, holding off Inland Empire by a score of 6-4 at San Manuel Stadium in San Bernardino.
DJ Peters' second hit of the game gave the Quakes a lead they would not relinquish, as they rallied from an early 4-1 deficit and moved a game ahead of the second-place 66ers.
The early headlines coming into Saturday night's game featured a pair of big-league names, as former Quake and two-time American League MVP Mike Trout rehabbed and faced off against Dodgers' lefty Scott Kamir, who made his third rehab start for Rancho.
Trout led off the first-inning with a double, a rocket down the left-field line that was 114 MPH off the bat. A Matt Thaiss RBI double scored Trout for an early 1-0 lead for the 66ers. Thaiss scored two batters later, as Kazmir gave up his third double of the inning, an RBI double by Taylor Ward.
Rancho got a run back in the second against 66ers' starter Austin Robichaux, as Luke Raley singled and scored on an RBI groundout from Zach McKinstry, making it 2-1.
Kazmir, who allowed four runs on five hits over just three innings, got tagged for two more in the last of the second. Jake Yacinich took Kazmir deep to right-center, giving the 66ers a 3-1 advantage. A two-out walk to Trout burned Kazmir, as Troy Montgomery followed with an RBI double, for a 4-1 edge.
The Quakes started their rally in the third, as Yusniel Díaz singled and later scored on an error, making it 4-2. Raley brought the Quakes to within a run, as he doubled home Peters to make it 4-3.
The Quakes grabbed the lead for good in the fourth, as Diaz and Peters had back-to-back RBI hits off Robichaux (2-6), giving the Quakes a 5-4 lead.
Garrett Kennedy's RBI double in the seventh scored Johan Mieses for a big insurance run, at 6-4.
Michael Boyle (3-1) retired eight of the ten batters he faced, firing three scoreless innings of relief to net the win.
Dean Kremer went the final three innings, striking out four along the way to secure his first save of the year.
Trout, who batted .306 in 50 games for the Quakes in 2010, finished 1-for-2 with a double and two runs scored in his third game of his current rehab assignment.
Rancho (10-7, 46-41) will send Devin Smeltzer (2-2) to the mound on Sunday evening at 6:05pm, as he'll be opposed by 66ers' right-hander Jesus Castillo (4-2) in the third game of the four-game set.
On Wednesday, July 12th, the Quakes will return to LoanMart Field for a four-game set against the San Jose Giants. Next Wednesday will be a Terra Vista Animal Hospital Bark in the Ballpark, as dogs are invited to the ballpark, with Pet Passes costing just $3 and the proceeds benefitting the Rancho Cucamonga Animal Shelter. Game time will be 7:05pm and tickets are available by calling (909) 481-5000 or online at rcquakes.com.
