Rancho Cucamonga, CA- Andrew Istler and the Quakes blew a one-run lead in the ninth inning and lost in 10 innings, 7-6, to Stockton on Monday night.
With the Quakes leading 6-4 into the eighth, Dean Kremer allowed a run to the Ports on an Eli White RBI single to start the comeback.
With Stockton down to its final strike, Mikey White singled home the tying run in the ninth inning off of Istler. In the top of the 10th, Argenis Raga ripped an RBI single against Istler and the Quakes failed to score in the home-half of the inning.
Istler (4-5) gave up two runs on six hits over one and a third innings while striking out one and walking one in the loss.
Devin Smeltzer started the game for the Quakes and struggled early. He allowed four runs in the second inning, but the Rancho offense rallied.
Ariel Sandoval put the Quakes on the scoreboard with a two-run single and was thrown out at second base when he tried to stretch the hit to a double.
Trailing 4-2, Rancho attacked Ports' starter Brendan Butler in the fourth inning. Jose Brizuela scored Zach Reks on an RBI single before Zach McKinstry tied the game with a sacrifice fly that plated Sandoval.
That brought up Dodger-rehabber Andre Ethier, who singled through the left side with Brizuela at third to make it 5-4. Ethier finished 2-for-3 and played left field over his five innings. His fellow rehabber, Adrián González, played nine innings at first base and went 0-for-5.
In the seventh inning, DJ Peters blasted his 23rd home run on the season to make it 6-4, but it was not enough for Rancho. The home run put him one long ball behind his teammate Ibandel Isabel for the California League lead.
Armando Ruiz (3-1) picked up the win for the Ports by throwing two scoreless innings and Nolan Blackwood earned his 15th save of the season in the Stockton victory.
Rancho Cucamonga (30-21, 66-55) will match-up with Stockton (24-27, 60-61) for game two of the series on Tuesday, August 15th, at 7:05 pm. Rancho is expected to turn to right-hander Jordan Sheffield (0-1), while the Ports will send righty Norge Ruiz (3-0) to the mound.
