Rancho Cucamonga, CA- The JetHawks ran away with an 8-1 win over the Quakes on Friday night to put Rancho on the brink of elimination in the South Division Finals. The win gave the JetHawks a 2-1 series lead, just one win from advancing to the California League Championship Series.
Dodger rehabber Brandon McCarthy (0-1) was handed the loss in his start, but the offense did not provide much help for the right-hander. McCarthy just allowed three runs on seven hits over five innings while striking out four and walking one.
The JetHawks found the scoreboard first in the third inning off of McCarthy. Roberto Ramos doubled home Yonathan Daza to start the scoring, but Lancaster was far from done. Sam Hilliard singled home Ramos to make it 2-0 before Wes Rogers plated Hilliard on an infield single to shortstop.
After Nolan Long took over on the mound for the Quakes, the JetHawks tacked on in the sixth on a Hamlet Marte RBI sacrifice fly to make it 4-0.
Adam Bray then entered for the Quakes and allowed four runs (one earned) in the seventh inning. With the bases loaded, two runs scored on a throwing error by first baseman Cristian Santana. Rogers and Mylz Jones then hit back-to-back RBI doubles and it was 8-0.
In the ninth inning, Bray was hit by a comebacker to the hill and had to leave the game.
In the top of the ninth inning, Zach Reks blasted a solo home run to start the inning. It was his first home run of the post-season and it was Rancho's eighth home run in the last three games.
On the mound for Lancaster, Brandon Gold (1-0) was brilliant in seven shutout innings against the Quakes. He only allowed seven hits while striking out five and walking one.
The Quakes were paced offensively by Luke Raley and Brandon Montgomery, who both singled twice, but could not produce any runs.
Rancho Cucamonga will take on Lancaster on Saturday, September 9th, at 7:05 pm for the fourth game of the South Division Finals at LoanMart Field in Rancho Cucamonga. The Quakes are expected to turn to righty Dustin May (0-0), while the JetHawks will send left-hander Ty Clubreth (7-1) to the hill.
