Lake Elsinore, CA - After scoring just one run in the previous two games of the series, the Rancho Cucamonga offense finally came to life in Lake Elsinore, as the Quakes earned their first win in six tries at The Diamond this year, scoring a 5-3 win on Saturday night.
Errol Robinson, in his first game as a Quake, played a big part, as he doubled twice, knocked in a run, scored a run and stole a base, as Rancho ended a two-game losing streak and gained a game on Lancaster, who saw their two-game winning streak end at home, thanks to Inland Empire.
Trailing 1-0 in the fifth, Victor Roache opened the inning with a double to right-center. That brought Robinson to the plate, as he ripped an Eric Lauer offering into left-center, scoring Roache to tie the game at 1-1. On the very next pitch, Robinson tried to steal third base. Storm catcher Kyle Overstreet's throw skipped down the left-field line, allowing Robinson to score the go-ahead run, as the Quakes took a 2-1 lead.
Rancho broke it open with three in the seventh, as Will Smith and Omar Estevez each collected an RBI single, making it 4-1. A passed ball allowed Smith to score the third run of the inning, as Rancho took a 5-1 advantage.
Quakes' starter Adam Bray gave (2-1) up an early run, but scattered seven hits over five innings, allowing just the one run to earn the win.
Parker Curry fired a scoreless sixth, before Michael Boyle pitched scoreless relief in the seventh and eighth, respectively. Boyle gave up a pair of runs in the last of the ninth and left with one out. Andrew Istler got the final two outs to record his sixth save of the year.
Lauer (2-4) gave up two runs on six hits over six innings, fanning a season-best ten in the loss for the Storm.
The win for Rancho (32-30) leaves them just one game back of first-place Lancaster with just eight to play in the first half. The Quakes will look for a split of the four-game series on Sunday at 1pm, as they send Yadier Álvarez (1-2) to the mound, opposite Lake Elsinore lefty Joey Lucchesi (4-3).
The Quakes will open a seven-game home stand this Monday, as they start the home stand with three against the Inland Empire 66ers. Monday is another Social Media Monday, as fans that follow the Quakes on social media platforms could win great prizes. Game time on Monday is 7:05pm and gates open at 6:05pm.
