CLINTON, IA (July 1, 2017) - Yojhan Quevedo lined a home run over the wall in left in the bottom of the 11th inning for a 2-1 Clinton LumberKings win against the Cedar Rapids Kernels on Saturday night at Ashford University Field. The win was just the second walk-off win by Clinton (3-7, 33-44) this season and the first with by way of the home run in over two seasons.
The game was one dominated by pitching. LumberKings starter Robert Dugger struck out seven over his five innings of work and allowed the only Kernels (4-6, 43-37) run of the game in the second inning. Hank Morrison had the only tally for Cedar Rapids with a solo home run to left that was his second of the series.
The run was the first of the game and looked to be enough for the Kernels as starter Clark Beeker shutout the LumberKings through the first four innings. In the bottom of the fifth, Clinton finally pushed across a run. Jhombeyker Morales and Nick Zammarelli III each singled with one out to put runners at first and third. Two batters later, Bryson Brigman singled with two out to centerfield to tie the game at one.
The game then locked into a battle of bullpens. Jack Anderson threw three shutout innings with five strikeouts, Fabian Roman added a scoreless frame in the ninth, and Jeffeson Medina earned the win with two shutout innings of relief.
Medina (4-0) added to his scoreless inning streak which now stands at 13.2 innings. He last gave up a run on June 9 against the Peoria Chiefs.
The deadlock ended abruptly in the bottom of the 11th inning. Patrick McGuff (0-2), in his first inning of relief, retired the first batter of the inning with a fly out but then served a 1-1 fastball to Quevedo that was lined over the wall in left for the game winner. The home run was his third of the season.
The LumberKings will continue the 7-game homestand with game three against the Kernels on Sunday afternoon. Left-handed pitcher Nick Wells (3-6, 6.35) will take the ball for Clinton and face Cedar Rapids right-handed pitcher Jax Griffin (0-0, 0.00).
