CLINTON, IA (July 6, 2017) - Yojhan Quevedo drove home the winning run for the Clinton LumberKings third walk-off win of the home stand as they dropped the Burlington Bees 6-5 in 12 innings at Ashford University Field on Thursday night. A misplay by Bees (5-10, 36-49) third basemen Richie Fecteau allowed Luis Rengifo to score the game's winning run.
The scoring stared in the top of the first inning for the second straight night. Keith Grieshaber started the Bees rally with a single to right and then stole second to move into scoring position. Robert Dugger, starting for Clinton (5-10, 36-56), then surrendered an RBI single to Jordan Zimmerman that scored Grieshaber for the game's first run.
The LumberKings then took control of the game in the bottom of the second inning with a four-run rally. Clinton sent eight men to the plate in the inning against Bees starter Andrew Vinson. Nick Thurman and Nick Zammaraelli opened the inning with led off singles and scorde on a Jhombeyker Morales RBI ground out and Dimas Ojeda RBI single, respectively. The inning was capped with a Luis Rengifo RBI double, giving the LumberKings a 4-1 lead.
In the bottom of the fifth inning Clinton added another run on a Quevedo double play ball that scored Rengifo from third.
Leading 5-1, the LumberKings carried their four-run lead into the seventh inning when Fabian Roman entered the game and did not record an out. The LumberKings reliever allowed three runs, two earned, on one hit while walking two.
Jeffeson Medina replaced Roman and recorded all three of the outs in the seventh inning to preserve the one run lead but then gave up the game's tying run in the top of the ninth.
The ninth began with a Derek Jenkins triple, one of his four hits in the game, but led to the first out of the inning. After Ojeda misplayed the ball in right, Jenkins tried to score on the play and was thrown out at the plate. The Bess still managed to push a run across on a combination of Jami Jones single, Grieshaber hit by pitch, and Joe Rizzo fielding error on a Zimmerman ground ball.
The game remained tied until the bottom of the 12th due to strong pitching from LumberKings reliever Michael Koval and Bees reliever Blake Smith.
Koval (2-5) earned his second win of the season with his three innings of shutout work that included two strikeouts and no walks.
Smith (1-2) set down the first seven Lumberkings he faced but allowed a one out single in the bottom of the 12th to Rengifo that put the winning run on.
