Rafhlmil Torres Named Florida State League Player of the Week

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — Daytona Tortugas infielder Rafhlmil Torres has been named the Florida State League Player of the Week for the week of Aug. 4-9, Minor League Baseball announced Monday.

Torres is the fourth Daytona player to earn a Florida State League honor this season, joining Jacob Friend, Lisnerkin Lantigua and Ty Doucette.

The 20-year-old switch-hitter turned in one of the top offensive performances in Minor League Baseball during Daytona's six-game series at St. Lucie, batting .565 (13-for-23) while posting a .565/.577/.696 slash line with nine runs scored, three doubles, four RBI, one walk, one stolen base and a 1.273 OPS.

Among all Florida State League hitters during the week, Torres ranked first in batting average (.565), on-base percentage (.577) and hits (13), tied for first in runs scored (9) and doubles (3), second in OPS (1.273) and total bases (16), and third in slugging percentage (.696). Among all qualified hitters across all of Single-A, Torres also led the level in batting average, hits and runs scored for the week.

Torres has remained one of the hottest hitters in the league beyond his award-winning week. Since July 28, he leads the Florida State League in batting average (.512), hits (22) and runs scored (16), while ranking second in on-base percentage (.542), third in OPS (1.240), fifth in slugging percentage (.698), tied for first in doubles (5), tied for fifth in RBI (10), tied for fourth in extra-base hits (6) and third in total bases (30).

Signed by the Cincinnati Reds as an international free agent out of Venezuela in January 2023, Torres has become one of the organization's most dependable everyday players. He leads the Florida State League with 101 games played and is the only player in the league to appear in 100 or more games this season.

Torres has also established himself as one of the premier defensive middle infielders in the Florida State League. He owns the highest fielding percentage among qualified league shortstops (.965) and has posted a .991 fielding percentage in 28 games at second base. Combined between the two middle infield positions, Torres has committed just 11 errors in 392 total chances for a .972 fielding percentage while helping turn 60 double plays.

His all-around play has helped fuel the FSL's best second-half offense and defense. Since June 19, Daytona leads the Florida State League in batting average (.278), hits (380), on-base percentage (.398), OPS (.827), fielding percentage (.979) and double plays turned (51).

A native of Maracay Venezuela, Torres is in his first full season with the Tortugas after playing 17 games with the club in 2025, and spending the previous three years in the Reds organization.
