RailRiders top Wings 5-1

The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders beat the Rochester Red Wings 5-1 Wednesday afternoon at Frontier Field. The Red Wings host Syracuse Thursday night at 7:05 p.m., with College Night specials and tailgate games.

The RailRiders plated the first run of the game in the top of the second inning on an RBI single off Red Wings starter David Hurlbut, giving Scranton/Wilkes-Barre an early 1-0 lead.
RailRiders starter Caleb Smith kept the Red Wings off the scoreboard early, allowing no runs through the first five innings. Zach Granite tallied the first hit for Rochester, a triple with two outs in the bottom of the third inning, but the team couldn't capitalize with a man in scoring position.
Rochester tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the sixth inning after a Scranton/Wilkes Barre error allowed Granite - who led off the inning with a single and stolen base - to score. Smith was replaced with one out in the inning after Granite advanced to second.
Smith finished with 5.1 innings of work, allowing one run and no earned runs on two hits, two walks and seven strikeouts. He threw 99 pitches - 61 for strikes.
The RailRiders responded quickly in the top of the seventh inning, two on an RBI double by Gleyber Torres for a 3-1 lead. Trevor Hildenberger replaced Hurlbut with two outs in the inning and allowed the hit that gave the RailRiders a two-run lead.
Hurlbut finished pitching 6.2 innings, allowing three earned runs on eight hits, one walk and a career-high 11 strikeouts. He threw 97 pitches - 67 for strikes.
Kevin Chapman came in for Hildenberger with one out in the top of the eighth inning, and retired the two batters he faced via the strikeout. With two outs and a runner at first in the top of the ninth inning, Kam Mickolio took over on the mound and issued a walk. Tyler Austin followed with a high wind-blown flyball that Granite appeared to lose in the sun. The ball landed near the warning track for an RBI double, increasing the RailRiders' lead to 4-1. A wild pitch brought in another run to provide a 5-1 lead. 
The RailRiders out-hit the Red Wings 11-4.

THIS DAY IN RED WINGS HISTORY
1992 - After not allowing any hits or runs in 7 1/3 innings, Rochester allowed an 11 run eighth inning rally en route to an 11-0 loss at Columbus. Pitcher Arthur Rhodes, who was perfect through seven and a third, gave up three earned runs without retiring any batters before he was taken out in the eighth inning.
2005 - Mike Rosamond's RBI single with two outs in the 12th inning gave Richmond a 4-3 win over Rochester on Tuesday night at The Diamond. Jason Bartlett drove in all three runs for the Red Wings, including a two-run homer in the ninth to tie the game. The Minnesota Twins selected righthanded pitcher Matt Garza with the 25th pick in the first round of the 2005 Major League Baseball amateur draft Tuesday. Garza, 21, who bats and throws righthanded, was 6-5, 3.07 (108.1 ip, 37 er) in 19 games (17 starts) with 37 walks and 120 strikeouts for Fresno State University. He led the conference in strikeouts earning him Western Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Year and First-Team All-WAC
THIS DAY IN INTERNATIONAL LEAGUE HISTORY
2005 - Second baseman Aaron Holbert slaps a single in the 6th inning to become Louisville's all-time hit king. Holbert's historic hit was his 442nd as a member of the Louisville franchise, breaking a threeway tie for the record he shared with Bill Lyons and Gene Roof. Holbert played for the Louisville Redbirds from 1995-1997 as part of the St. Louis organization. Seven years later, after Louisville had moved to the International League, changed its name to "RiverBats" and then to "Bats", and
switched affiliations to Milwaukee and then to Cincinnati, Holbert found his way back. He was signed by the Reds as a free agent prior to the 2004 season, and he spent the next two years smacking out 173 more hits playing for the Bats. He finished his Louisville career with 471 hits.

1946 - One hour before game time, Pirates players vote 20-16 in favor of a walkout rather than play against the Giants, in order to gain recognition of the American Baseball Guild. To strike, however, requires a two-thirds majority and so the walkout does not occur. Aims of organizer Robert Murphy are not exactly stated, but goals are sometimes identified as a minimum salary of $7,500, arbitration of salary disputes, and players sharing in 50 percent of any sale price.
