Rancho Cucamonga, CA - A five-run eighth brought the Quakes back from a late deficit on Friday night, as Rancho Cucamonga beat the Lake Elsinore Storm by a score of 7-5 at LoanMart Field.
A pair of solo homers tied the game and set the stage for Hamlet Marte's go-ahead RBI triple, which put the Quakes ahead to stay against Storm reliever Dauris Valdez and kept the Quakes in first place in the South Division.
After seeing the Storm rally for three runs in the top of the eighth inning to come back from their own deficit, the Quakes got busy against Valdez (0-1). Cristian Santana opened the frame with his first long-ball as a Quakes, making it 4-3. Two batters later, Donovan Casey hammered one over the center-field fence for his first of the year, evening the game at 4-4.
After Cody Thomas reached on an error, Marte delivered his biggest hit as a Quake, lining an RBI triple down the right-field line, scoring Thomas to give Rancho a 5-4 advantage. Rancho tacked on two more for insurance, as Steve Berman knocked in a run with a single and Omar Estevez brought home Berman with a sac fly, giving the Quakes some cushion at 7-4.
They needed the extra runs, as Ryan Moseley surrendered a solo home run with two outs to Taylor Kohlwey, then walked Edward Olivares. But with the tying run at the plate, Moseley fanned Eguy Rosario to end the game and earn his second save of the year.
Quakes' starter Dean Kremer was strong on Friday, allowing just one run over five innings, but settled for a no-decision, as the Storm scored three times in the eighth against eventual winner Sven Schueller (2-0).
Rancho (8-8) remains tied for first place in the South Division, thanks to the win. The Quakes will send Andrew Sopko (1-1) to the hill on Saturday night, as he takes on Storm righty Ronald Bolaños (0-2) at 7:05pm.
Saturday night will feature a post-game Fireworks display, thanks to the California Earthquake Authority. Quakes' players will also be wearing special "Earthquake" jerseys, which will be auctioned off throughout the game. Tickets are available by calling (909) 481-5000 or online at rcquakes.com.
