Prior to tonight's game against the New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox third baseman Pablo Sandoval was returned from his injury rehab assignment with Triple-A Pawtucket, activated from the 10-day disabled list, and designated for assignment.

Sandoval, 30, was placed on the 10-day disabled list on June 20 with a left inner ear infection. Signed by Boston as a free agent in November 2014, the Venezuelan native has appeared in 161 games with the Red Sox (2015-17), batting .237 (136-for-575) with a .646 OPS. In 32 games this season, he is 21-for-99 (.212) with four home runs and 12 RBI. He spent his first seven major league seasons with San Francisco (2008-14), winning World Series titles with the Giants in 2010, 2012, and 2014. A two-time All-Star, Sandoval has hit .285 (1,082-for-3,790) with 120 home runs and 521 RBI in 1,030 career major league games.
