Red Sox Use Big Inning to Take Series

FREDERICK, MD-The Salem Red Sox scored six times in the second inning to defeat the Frederick Keys 7-2 on Thursday night at Nymeo Field. With the setback, the Keys are now 10 games behind the first-place Lynchburg Hillcats with 17 left to play.
Salem (57-63, 25-27) sent 10 men to bat against Cristian Alvarado in the second. After the right-hander retired the first batter of the inning, the next seven reached for the visitors. With two on, Jake Romanski hit an RBI double, while Victor Acosta added one of his own to make it 3-0. Ryan Scott and Tyler Hill followed with RBI singles, before Brett Netzer completed the scoring with a two-bagger to right.

Frederick (57-64, 22-30) countered with two in the third off Denyi Reyes, but would not score the rest of the game. A single by Daniel Fajardo and a double by Jake Ring put runners at second and third with one out, while T.J. Nichting added a sac-fly and Wilson Garcia posted a second double to make it 6-2. Salem got one run back in the fourth on a double by Netzer and an RBI single from C.J. Chatham.
Reyes (2-1) turned in his best Carolina League start, allowing two runs on four hits over seven innings to earn the win. He struck out six and did not walk a batter, while the right-hander retired the final 11 batters he faced. Alvarado (10-10) surrendered seven runs (six earned) on nine hits in four innings. It was his third straight setback.
On Friday, the Keys begin a six-game roadtrip, starting with a three-game series against the Lynchburg Hillcats. Left-hander Alex Wells (5-7, 3.54) starts for Frederick against Lynchburg right-hander Eli Morgan (7-5, 3.83). The Keys return to Nymeo Field on August 24 when the Carolina Mudcats come to town for a three-game series.
