The Fresno Grizzlies (18-27) were shutout for the first time this season in a 9-0 loss to the Memphis Redbirds (28-17) on Monday at Chukchansi Park. The clubs split the four-game series two games each.
The Grizzlies and the Redbirds took part in a pitcher's duel that lasted through the fifth inning. Memphis took a 1-0 lead in the sixth when Paul DeJong (3-for-5) hit his 10th home run of the season, a solo shot to right.
The Redbirds extended their lead to 2-0 in the seventh. Harrison Bader (4-for-5) led off the inning with a double into the right field corner and scored on an Alberto Rosario RBI single.
Fresno starter David Martinez (1-6) tossed 98 pitches through six and a third. He allowed the two runs on six hits and a walk with five strikeouts. The five punch-outs are a new season-high for Martinez in his longest start of 2017.
Grizzlies catcher Eduardo de Oleo went 2-for-3 his Triple-A debut while Juan Centeno is up with Houston. Teoscar Hernández extended his hit streak to 10 games with a double in the fourth, the second longest current hit streak behind Centeno (16).
Memphis made the final score 9-0 in an 11-batter final frame. Patrick Wisdom hit a two-run homer to right, his ninth of the season and Rangel Ravelo knocked a two-RBI double to do the brunt of the damage while Nick Martini (2-for-4), Luke Voit and DeJong recorded RBI as well.
Redbirds starter John Gant pitched four scoreless innings and allowed three hits and two walks with two strikeouts. Reliever Josh Zeid (2-1) earned the win in a scoreless fifth with one punch-out.
The Grizzlies travel to Tacoma to play a four-game series against the Rainiers that begins on Tuesday at 6:05 p.m. RHP David Paulino (0-0, 3.00) will get the start for Fresno to face Tacoma RHP Tyler Cloyd (0-0, 0.00) at Cheney Stadium.
