PORTLAND, ME - The Eastern League is pleased to announce the winners of the Eastern League Player of the Week Award and Eastern League Pitcher of the Week Award for the period of August 14th through August 20th.

New Hampshire Fisher Cats catcher Reese McGuire has been selected as the Eastern League Player of the Week for the period of August 14th-August 20th. The 22-year old batted .533 (8-for-15) with one double, three home runs, five runs scored, four RBIs, two walks, and a 1.200 slugging percentage in four games for the Fisher Cats last week. McGuire, who is a native of Seattle, Washington, had at least one hit in all four games he played in last week and collected multiple hits in three of those games, including a stretch of three straight games with a home run from August 15th-August 19th. The 5'11", 215 lb. slugger led all Eastern League players in slugging percentage (1.200) and OPS (1.788) last week and tied for the lead in home runs (3). He also finished ranked among the weekly league leaders in batting average (.533-2nd), total bases (18-2nd), extra-base hits (3-tied 3rd), on-base percentage (.588-tied 3rd), and runs scored (5-tied 5th). Reese, who is hitting .305 with five homers and 15 RBIs in 25 games for the Fisher Cats this season, was acquired by the Toronto Blue Jays in a trade from the Pittsburgh Pirates on August 1, 2016. He was selected by Pittsburgh with the 14th overall pick in the first round of the 2013 draft out of Kentwood High School in Covington, Washington.

Dan Slania, a right-handed starting pitcher for the Richmond Flying Squirrels, has been selected as the Eastern League Pitcher of the Week for the period of August 14th-August 20th. The 6'5", 275 lb. hurler started one game for the Flying Squirrels last week and had a record of 1-0 with eight strikeouts and a 0.00 ERA. Slania, who is a native of Phoenix, Arizona, made his lone start of the week on Saturday night against the visiting Akron RubberDucks in a game that followed the completion of a suspended game and threw a complete game in Richmond's 2-0 victory. Slania gave up just two hits and struck out eight batters and walked one over seven innings of work while throwing the first shutout of his career. The 25-year was the only Eastern League pitcher to throw a shutout last week and he also ranked among the weekly league leaders in ERA (0.00-tied 1st), wins (1-tied 1st), complete games (1-tied 1st), WHIP (0.43-2nd), batting average against (.087-2nd), and strikeouts (8-tied 10th). Dan, who has a record of 4-3 with a 3.54 ERA in 11 starts with Richmond this season, was selected by the San Francisco Giants in the fifth round of the 2013 draft out of the University of Notre Dame, where he made 78 appearances over three seasons and had a 1.71 ERA while striking out 100 batters in 121 innings.
